WW2 cover 50th ann Sinking of the Tirpitz Signed C Cole, D A Oldham both 617 Sqn on Tirpitz Raid. 12 November 1994 Woodhall Spa Sinking of the Tirpitz Special Postmark Special picture cachet of Lancaster of 617 Sqn. successfully attacking the Tirpitz. The famous 617 Squadron was commanded at the time by Wing Commander J B Tait, who led every attack. On 15th September, 1944 the squadron attacked the Tirpitz' in Alta Fjord with 12, 0001b Tallboy' bombs. Although a dense smoke screen hid the target, one bomb did hit the ship, smashing the bow. As she was unseaworthy, Donitz decided to use her as a shore battery and she steamed slowly to Tromso to be anchored in shallow water. The final attack by 617 Squadron was on 12th November, 1944 in clear weather when at least three Tallboys hit the ship which capsized and rested upside-down on the bottom, trapping 1500 crew. About 800 were rescued. With added cachet 60th Anniversary Avro Lancaster 1941 to 2001 of the first Flight. Flown Personally Signed by Dr John M Fabian ( Colonel USAF Retired) Orbiter Challenger STS7 and STS51 G Mission Specialist. NASA EXPERIENCE: Selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA in January 1978, and became an astronaut in August 1979. During the following years, he worked extensively on satellite deployment and retrieval activities, including development of the Canadian Remote Manipulator System. A veteran of two space flights, he has logged over 316 hours in space. He served as a mission specialist on STS-7 (June 18-24, 1983) and STS-51G (June 17-24, 1985). He was scheduled to fly next in May 1986 on STS-61G. This flight was one of several deferred by NASA in the wake of the Challenger accident. Fabian left NASA on January 1, 1986 to become Director of Space, Deputy Chief of Staff, Plans and Operations, Headquarters USAF. Colonel Fabian retired from the USAF in June 1987 and joined Analytic Services Inc (ANSER), a non-profit aerospace professional services firm in Arlington, Virginia, where he is now President and Chief Executive Officer. SPACE FLIGHT EXPERIENCE: Fabian first flew as a mission specialist on STS-7, which launched from Kennedy Space Center, Florida, on June 18, 1983. This was the second flight for the Orbiter Challenger and for the first mission with a 5-person crew. During the mission, the crew deployed satellites for Canada (ANIK C-2) and Indonesia (PALAPA B-1): operated the Canadian-built Remote Manipulator System (RMS) to perform the first deployment and retrieval exercise with the Shuttle Pallet Satellite (SPAS-01): conducted the first formation flying of the Orbiter with a free-flying satellite (SPAS-01): carried and operated the first U. S. /German cooperative materials science payload (OSTA-2): and operated the Continuous Flow Electrophoresis System (CFES) and the Monodisperse Latex Reactor (MLR) experiments, in addition to activating seven Getaway Specials, Mission duration was 147 hours before landing at Edwards Air Force Base, California, on June 24, 1983. On his second mission, Fabian flew on STS 51-G which launched from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, on June 17, 1985, and landed at Edwards Air Force Base, California, on June 24, 1985, after completing approximately 170 hours of space flight. This international crew deployed communications satellites for Mexico (Morelos), the Arab League (Arabsat), and the United Stated (ATandT Telstar). They used the Remote Manipulator System (RMS) to deploy and later retrieve the SPARTAN satellite which performed 17 hours of x-ray astronomy experiments while separated from the Space Shuttle. In addition, the crew activated the Automated Directional Solidification Furnace (ADSF), six Getaway Specials, participated in biomedical experiments, and conducted a laser tracking experiment as part of the Strategic Defence Initiative. He left the Army after World War II, went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in aeronautical engineering from University of Minnesota in 1949, and later joined the Minnesota Air National Guard after working for Boeing as an aeronautical engineer. He joined the United States Air Force, and attended the U. S. Air Force Test Pilot School in 1955. In 1959, he applied to, and was selected as one of the Mercury Seven, NASA's first class of astronauts. Slayton was scheduled to pilot the second U. S. crewed orbital spaceflight, but was grounded in 1962 by atrial fibrillation, an irregular heart rhythm. In March 1972, he was medically cleared to fly and was the docking module pilot of the 1975 Apollo-Soyuz Test Project (ASTP). Slayton continued to work at NASA until 1982. He also helped develop the Space Shuttle. Slayton died from brain cancer on June 13, 1993, aged 69. Details and Certificate of Authenticity enclosed. Good condition. Munro was awarded his DFC whilst serving with 97 Squadron prior to his tour with 617 Squadron. He was awarded the DSO whilst with 617 Squadron. Flown in Supermarine Spitfire MK 14 to Commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the first flight of the spitfire. Personally Signed by Gp Capt Sir Douglas Bader, the legless Fighter pilot CO 242 Hurricane Squadron during the Battle of Britain, shot down in 1941 and taken prisoner, escaped was recaptured and sent to Oflag 7c Colditz Castle until released by the US Army in 1945, and Signed by James Edgar ( Johnnie ) Johnson Pilot Officer - Pilot Decorations DFC DSO CBE CB Squadrons 616 19 127 Wing 125 Wing. 38 Enemy aircraft destroyed. He received the DFC ( US) the order of Leopold and the C de G ( Belg). He served in the USAF and Korea in 1950. He retired on March 15, 1966, as an Air Vice Marshal and also Signed by Wg Cdr Stanford Tuck who was OC 257 Squadron during the Battle of Britain and credited with 18 Victories.
